Description

This two-day seminar delivers the bio-psycho-social aspects of traumatic stress, traumatic grief, & traumatic loss. Mental health professionals are on the front lines and, in many cases, have the initial contact with the individual(s) who has experienced traumatic stress. Clinicians are routinely called upon to serve survivors of major disasters, war, childhood physical and sexual trauma, rape, violent crime, and other forms of traumatic events. Participation in this workshop leads to a holistic and systemic understanding of traumatic stress and provides skills for immediate use in a variety of clinical settings.

How people respond to traumatic stress is an individual matter based on a number of factors including psychological, emotional, social, cultural, biological, spiritual, and familial. The two-day training will involve an analysis of the various defense mechanisms and other coping skills individuals employ during and following the experience of traumatic stress. Key approaches and interventions include:

  • Crisis intervention
  • Critical incident stress debriefing
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This training provides take-away evidence-based, best-practice clinical interventions and techniques for the Assessment, Safety & Stabilization, and Remembrance & Mourning phases of trauma treatment. In addition, completion of this two-day seminar meets the educational requirement when applying to become a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (International Association for Trauma Professionals, www.traumapro.net).

J. Eric Gentry, PhD, LMHC, DAAETS, FAAETS is an internationally recognized leader in the study and treatment of traumatic stress and compassion fatigue. His Ph.D. is from Florida State University where he studied with Professor Charles Figley--a pioneer of these two fields. In 1997, he co-developed the Accelerated Recovery Program (ARP) for Compassion Fatigue - the world's only evidence-based treatment protocol for compassion fatigue. In 1998, he introduced the Certified Compassion Fatigue Specialist Training and Compassion Fatigue Prevention & Resiliency Training. These two trainings have demonstrated treatment effectiveness for the symptoms of compassion fatigue, and he published these effects in several journals. He has trained over 100,000 health professionals over the past 20 years.

Dr. Gentry was original faculty, curriculum designer and Associate Director of the Traumatology Institute at Florida State University. In 2001, he became the co-director and moved this institute to the University of South Florida where it became the International Traumatology Institute. In 2010, he began the International Association of Trauma Professionals - a training and cortication body-for which he was the vice president.

In 2005, Hogrefe and Huber published Trauma Practice: Tools for Stabilization and Recovery-a critically acclaimed text on the treatment of traumatic stress for which Dr. Gentry is a co-author. The Second Edition was released in 2010 and the Third Edition in 2015. He is also the author of the groundbreaking Forward-Facing® Trauma Therapy: Healing the Moral Wound. He is the co-author of Forward-Facing® Professional Resilience: Resolution and Prevention of Burnout, Toxic Stress and Compassion Fatigue, Unlocking the Keys to Human Resilience, and Transformative Care: A Trauma-Focused Approach to Caregiving. These books provide a new vision for trauma therapy in the 21st Century. He has written numerous chapters, papers, and peer-reviewed journal articles in the areas of traumatic stress and compassion fatigue. Dr. Gentry is a Master Traumatologist with over 35 years of clinical experience with trauma, Complex PTSD, Personality disorders, and dissociation.

He is the President and CEO of The Forward-Facing® Institute and owner of Compassion Unlimited -- a private psychotherapy, training, and consulting practice-in Phoenix, AZ.

Robert Rhoton, PsyD, LPC, DAAETS, is a retired faculty member from Ottawa University (Phoenix) where he worked for 20 years in the Behavioral Sciences and Counseling Department. Dr. Rhoton’s primary interests are training counselors to work with traumagenic family dynamics; child & family trauma; and non-egoic models of treatment.

As CEO of Arizona Trauma Institute, Dr. Rhoton has supervised multiple outpatient clinics, juvenile justice programs, and intensive outpatient substance abuse programs for adolescents, as well as day treatment programs for children and youth, adult offender programs, child and family therapeutic services, advanced training in child and adolescent trauma treatment, family therapy, and family trauma work.

Dr. Rhoton is the past president of the Arizona Trauma Therapy Network (2010-2012). He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and collaborates and consults with several Arizona community behavioral health agencies to fine tune their understanding of trauma. Dr. Rhoton serves on the Arizona Department of Health Services Trauma Informed Care (TIC) task-force as a community member. He is a gubernatorial appointee to the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners and Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family.
